A superb goal from Jamie Sixsmith a minute from time set the Malta U-16 team on the way to a 2-0 victory over Liechtenstein yesterday in their final match from the UEFA Development Tournament.

Kyle Mifsud, who came on as a substitute, wrapped up the win with a well-taken strike in stoppage time as the Maltese boys ended their participation with a perfect record of three wins from three games.

With the hosts already assured of top spot after beating Belarus (3-2) and Azerbaijan (3-0), coach Sergio Soldano made a number of changes to his starting line-up for yesterday’s game against a Liechtenstein side who were coming from back-to-back defeats.

While Malta were the better team for long stretches, Liechtenstein produced a fighting display to keep their opponents at bay but Sixsmith, the son of former Malta midfielder Paul Sixsmith, broke their resistance with a thumping drive from outside the box in the dying stages.

Mifsud then added gloss to Malta’s win.

Soldano, who introduced most of his first-choice players in the second half, conceded that his team struggled to show their best but was nonetheless pleased with their overall performance during the tournament.

“The team struggled to find its rhythm,” Soldano said.

“Playing three games in five days is not easy but overall we have done very well. This is a very interesting squad and I’m delighted with the efforts of the players.

“Our performances in this tournament show that the MFA is doing a very good job in youth development and we have to keep working in this direction.”
