Do you intend voting at the upcoming KSU election? Why?

I had planned to vote this year, but I don’t know whether my vote will be of any use now. In this election there will only be candidates of one party – SDM – running against individual candidates or new parties that stand no chance of winning. Melanie Bonnici Bennet, BA European Studies (Hons) with Psychology, 3rd year.

If the election actually takes place I will vote. As a student I believe it is my duty to exercise our right to vote to choose the people who will represent us. Dionne Taryn Gatt, LLB (Hons), 4th year.

Yes I intend to vote. We have right to express ourselves. By giving our support we have the power to achieve things that will enhance our own future. Angelica Fenech, BA Music and Theatre Studies, 3rd year.

What do you think about Pulse’s decision to not contest?

Pulse is making a strong and valid political statement. But campaigning for electoral reform as it did in the past may have been a more efficient method of bringing about change. Melanie Bonnici Bennet

Pulse’s decision not to contest is bold. Independent candidates should take this opportunity to step forward, take initiative and forward their ideas. Dionne Taryn Gatt

They may have been discouraged by their previous results, but I think they should still continue to contest, as it would put new ideas into play. Angelica Fenech

Why is voter turnout so low?

Students do not feel involved in student politics. Many believe electoral success is reserved for a few popular elites who gain a little power once in KSU. Low turnout and an antiquated electoral system prevent proportional representation. So students have no motivation to vote. Melanie Bonnici Bennet

We have long been faced with a two-party system, even to elect student bodies like KSU. Students face the same political jargon year after year, with worthy proposals being overshadowed by the rivalry between parties. This does not encourage students to vote for the right reasons. Dionne Taryn Gatt

Turnout is affected by students’ way of thinking. Some say elections are a waste of time, others do not care or do not believe that through elections there may be some good outcomes. Angelica Fenech
