Update 2 - The mayor and parish priest of St Julian's have expressed disappointment and disgust over what took place in their locality yesterday as thousands celebrated St Patrick's Day - by drinking gallons of beer.

St Julian's mayor Karl Gouder in a Facebook post said he was unhappy with the way things were developing.

"We too are not happy with the throngs of people celebrating in our locality. Just to make it clear, the council does not issue any permits for bars or discos. We only pay for the cleaning afterwards and all the maintenance after. The council makes no money from this event. On the other hand, we pay thousands in washing and cleaning.

"This year we held meetings with police, added extra public toilets, got ambulances on site. Having said that 20,000 people in the pjazza is way too much. We are going to make it very clear with the authorities that we are not happy," the mayor said.

Parish priest Fr Claude Portelli said he was disappointed by the shameful behaviour seen in the afternoon and the evening.

"Apart from the around 20,000 people present today, which is already too much, I express my disgust at the many guys and girls urinating in every corner available in the Spinola area.

The church car park areas became a public convenience this afternoon and evening, with rows of people constantly waiting to urinate by the boundary wall

The church car park areas became a public convenience this afternoon and evening, with rows of people constantly waiting to urinate by the boundary wall. Utterly disgusting, unhygienic and totally not on.

"Obviously not forgetting the loud blast of music starting from as early as 11.30am and getting louder by the hour..."

Fr Portelli said he sympathised with the local council which had to clean up the whole area and hoped everything would be clean before the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows today.
