During February, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Bougainville island region, in the Solomon Sea. Quakes in this region are common because of the Australian plate’s movement towards the Pacific plate. Locally, two small earthquakes were recorded offshore close to the Magħlaq fault area, along Malta’s south coast. The Seismic Monitoring Research Group received just two reports from locals living in Għaxaq and Żejtun. Seismic activity in this area has been recorded by a station in Wied Dalam since July 2015. If readers experience any earthquake-related shaking, they are invited to fill in the questionnaire found at http://seismic.research.um.edu.mt/questionnaire.php.
