Police in Minnesota’s Hennepin County warned motorists on Wednesday to stay off the ice as warm weather has made it perilous to take shortcuts across the many lakes in the area.

The driver of a Ford sports utility vehicle became the first to crack through the ice of Lake Minnetonka while taking a shortcut from Wayzata Bay to Excelsior Bay, the sheriff’s office said in this post to Facebook. Luckily the driver got out safely.

Warmer weather is forecast and ice has deteriorated greatly, the sheriff’s office warned.
