Former MEP and Prime Minister's advisor Glenn Bedingfield is expected to contest the second district on behalf of the Labour Party in the upcoming general election.

The candidacy would put Mr Bedingfield, a close associate of Joseph Muscat, in direct conflict with Joe Mizzi, now transport minister. Mr Bedingfield had also temporarily taken up a seat in the European Parliament after Joseph Muscat was elected Labour leader.

When contacted, Mr Bedingfield did not confirm his interest in contesting the election, but said: "I will do whatever is needed where the Labour Party is concerned."

Mr Bedingfield is no stranger to controversy: recently he was accused of breaching ethics for writing partisan blogs while serving as the PM's adviser.

Writing in his blog, former Nationalist candidate and TV presenter Norman Vella said Mr Bedingfield was popular with the core vote of the PL on the second district, historically a Labour stronghold.

Mr Mizzi had inherited the biggest number of votes from Dr Muscat in the 2013 election. Also elected were Helena Dalli and Stefan Buontempo while Chris Agius was elected in the casual election.
