Once again I see that Joseph Muscat has lent invaluable weight in controlling excesses in, for example, the property market.

His support for a prohibitory injunction relating to the selling, giving away or transferring of property rights, where serious questions remain unanswered, is the morally right thing to do.

We all know that in times gone by, the playing field has been skewed against honest Maltese people. Too often power and influence have been the driving forces to wage war against the weaker members of society.

I see today that this has surely stopped. The less advantaged will have their say in court no doubt and Dr Muscat’s intervention reinforces this conviction.

Malta has come a long way since 2004. The population in the main embraces change. Be it with gay rights, immigrant welfare, religious freedom of expression and all the other issues where fairness should always be paramount.

Indeed given the terrible pressure now across the EU, Malta stands out as a beacon of hope. As it did in 1943 when total Nazi aggression failed to destroy the essential spirit of freedom which burns so brightly here on this very day.

May I applaud the Catholic Church and Caritas for their roles in holding the moral spirit of Malta together in such troubled times. Especially the work painfully done to heal and free heroin addicts from a life in hell on our own troubled earth.

So let us all join with Muscat in bringing our boots to bear with his, in stamping the ground and making level playing fields a thing of both the present and the future. Make the greedy tremble. The desperate be filled with hope for fairer times ahead. The young given opportunities to expand their own potential. The old be treated with that respect that comes from a lifetime of experience. A virtue that needs to be exploited in the business sector. Not to stagnate because of ridiculous age constraints, as fields of employment continue to expand.

Long may that continue – nurtured by good governance at the very top.
