Mario Fenech CaruanaThe introduction and impact of green and sustainable chemistry in the A-level chemistry curriculum was the subject of a doctoral thesis by Mario Fenech Caruana for a Ph.D in Science Education he was awarded by the University of York.
His research included a case study that investigated the reaction of Maltese students to the introduction of a set of radical scientific concepts that overlap with the principles of sustainability and propose a modern version of chemistry that is less toxic, less hazardous, highly efficient and more environmentally friendly.
The project involved the design, implementation and evaluation of an intervention package aimed at introducing the basic ideas of green chemistry in the classroom and school laboratory in post-16 educational institutions.
The thesis was supervised by Prof. Judith Bennett, former head of the Department of Education and currently a Salters’ Professor of Science Education as well as leader of the University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG).
Dr Fenech Caruana is a senior lecturer at the Junior College Chemistry Department.
