In the weeks leading up to carnival, pupils and staff at Maria Regina College’s Mosta Primary B created a range of musical instruments made out of plastic containers, milk cartons, boxes, plastic and metal caps and baby milk powder containers.

At a special carnival activity attended by Peter Paul Galea of the group Tribali the children enthusiastically showed off their finished products and Galea guided them to shake and beat their ‘drums’ to produce a melody while he joined in with his own recycled drums.

Besides showing the pupils how to have fun in a simple way, the school, which takes part in the Dinja Waħda environmental education programme, sought to promote the importance of reusing materials to care for the environment. The event also raised money for poor children in the Philippines.
