Harper Lee, author of the literary classic, "To Kill a Mockingbird," has died at the age of 89.

The book, about a child's view of right and wrong in 930s Alabama, won Lee a Pulitzer Prize and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

For decades it was thought she would never follow up "To Kill a Mockingbird", but in July of 2015 her publisher released the book "Go Set a Watchman" which presents the same characters at a later time and from a different point of view.

Watchman immediately became one of the fastest-selling books ever, with readers snapping up more than one million copies in the first week.

But the book also generated controversy from those who said that it was actually a draft of "Mockingbird" and that Lee never intended for it to be published.

She spent her final years in declining health in a nursing home in Alabama.

Following are 10 of her best quotations on tolerance, acceptance, understanding, friendship and justice:

:: "The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."

:: "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it."

:: "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what."

:: "People generally see what they look for and hear what they listen for."

:: "We're paying the highest tribute you can pay a man. We trust him to do right. It's that simple."

:: "Mockingbirds don't do one thing except make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corn cribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."

:: "You can choose your friends but you sho' can't choose your family, an' they're still kin to you no matter whether you acknowledge 'em or not, and it makes you look right silly when you don't."

:: "I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks."

:: "As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it - whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash."

:: "'Atticus, he was real nice'. 'Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them'."
