The Hungarian woman allegedly raped by a Libyan in Paceville earlier this month was highly intoxicated, with her blood alcohol concentration soaring to well over 200 milligrams per decilitre, a court heard today.

Additionally, a used condom was found in the apartment where the alleged rape took place.

Police inspector Matthew Spagnol was testifying in the case against Ezzedin Salem Elaoud, 26, of Tripoli, who stands charged with raping and assaulting the 27-year-old Hungarian woman in Paceville on the night of February 5.

Insp. Spagnol told Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona that the woman rushed out of a St Julian’s apartment in Triq il-Wilġa naked, with a towel wrapped around her and banged on the door of the accused’s neighbour, an Egyptian national, shouting for help.

Under cross-examination by lawyer Arthur Azzopardi, Insp. Spagnol said that the neighbour confirmed that, at some point, the accused had approached him to return the woman’s clothes.

Duty Magistrate Joe Mifsud had also instructed the police “not to rush”.

It also emerged that the accused knew the name of the victim.

Magistrate Micallef Trigona turned down the prosecution’s request for the victim to testify via video conferencing, stating that he wanted her to be present in the courtroom for her to testify viva voce. Her testimony will be preceded by that of forensic expert Mario Scerri.

The case continues on February 25.
