Updated 6.30pm - The Maltese police have arrested a man wanted for questioning by the Polish police over the grisly murder of a young woman in Posnan earlier this month.

The Polish police want to question Cajetan Poznanski, 27, over the murder of his Italian teacher, identified only as Catherine, whose charred, decapitated body was found in a bag earlier this month.

The head was found in a back bag.

Mr Poznanski was arrested by plain clothes policemen at Valletta City Gate this afternoon after the police tracked him down yesterday, sources told Times of Malta. The man, who offered no resistance, was staying in a hotel in Valletta.

He had escaped Poland and travelled to Germany and Italy before taking a ferry to Malta. It is thought that he was planning to go to North Africa.

In a statement, the Malta police said the Polish police requested Malta's assistance two days ago. Investigations  showed that the man arrived in Malta on board the Sicily ferry on February 9.

The Polish police were informed and officers flew to Malta to track him down.

Officers from the Criminal Investigations Department, the Cyber Crime Unit and the Immigration Section were involved in the investigation.

Searches in several localities were made before the arrest was made at City Gate.

He was arrested on the basis of a European Arrest Warrant and proceedings are being launched for his extradition to Warsaw.

The Daily Mail earlier this week reported about the murder, saying Poznanski was considered as one of Europe's most wanted man and a search for him was going in several countries.

It said Poznanski, a librarian with no criminal record, is obsessed with the film character Hannibal Lecter and had allegedly murdered his tutor with a Samurai sword.
