Hibs Electrofix completed a double over Gżira Athleta to keep in touch with women’s league leaders Caffe Moak Luxol who made it six wins from six matches after beating Floriana on Sunday.

In a tight encounter, it was only in the last minutes that Hibs succeeded in breaking down Athleta’s resistance to chalk up their fifth win and consolidate second place.

Hibs led 12-8 at the end of a low-key first quarter but Athleta fought back midway through the second period to overturn the result and take a 27-22 lead.

Athleta held on to their advantage as play got underway after the interval but in the closing minutes of the third quarter, Hibs found their touch to get back in the driving seat and start the last 10 minutes46-42 in front.

Athleta battled on bravely but their efforts were undone in the closing minutes as Hibs potted successive points to win the match 61-47.

Leaders Luxol met little difficulty against bottom-placed Floriana, winning 91-27.

Victory was never in doubt for the champions as they built a 45-12 half-time lead. After the interval Luxol continued to dominate, falling just short of reaching the 100-point mark in the end.

On Saturday, Depiro returned to winning ways after beating Starlites to practically book their place in the play-offs.

Depiro led 24-12 at half-time and never looked back.

After containing their opponents’ comeback attempts, Depiro looked more aggressive in the last quarter for a deserved 51-30 win.
