It was with dismay that I read a letter to the editor from Tom Harris, the executive director of the International Climate Science Coalition out of Ontario, Canada (‘Warming, weather not linked’, February 2).

As a Canadian visiting Malta, I feel it my moral duty to enable the people here to be better informed about this institution. The International Climate Science Coalition is an organisation about climate science in name only; it is in fact an institution of climate change sceptics.

Funding for this group comes from the Heartland Institute which has been identified by SourceWatch and others as a front for the ultra-conservative Koch Brothers, the primary backers of the Tea Party.Tom Harris himself has been employed in Canada as director of operations by the High Park Advocacy Group, which is registered as a lobbying firm for several energy industry clients.

I have not been able to find any papers submitted by Harris to any scientific journals or universities for peer review. It is not my intent to tell the people of Malta that they should not listen to the coalition or to Harris, but I believe it is disingenuous for this group to call itself a “climate science coalition” when they are actually part of the group of deniers trying to undermine the rest of the scientific community, which has reached consensus on climate change.

I also believe the people of Malta should be informed about groups that are trying to influence ordinary people through a letter to the editor.
