An audio-visual installation was unveiled at Spazzju Kreattiv, St James Cavalier today to show the many facets of migration.

The Lampedusa Experience is a collection of powerful, visual documents captured by three top photo journalists, Jason Florio, Darrin Zammit Lupi and Mark Zammit Cordina.

The Lampedusa Experience, however, does not simply document migration from the perspective of those carrying out the rescues. Perhaps somewhat unsettling, it also features items gathered from the rescue missions, such as a large dinghy which carried scores of asylum seekers last August as well as life jackets – tangible remnants which bring us closer to the experience and dangers migrants face just off our shores.

The photos and items on display were mainly taken during rescues carried out by the Malta-based MOAS (Migrant Offshore Aid Station).

Curated by Sarah Buckle, it also features video clips related to the different facets of migration, including statements made by the anti-migrant Għaqda Patrijotti Maltin group.

Located in Spot A, the exhibition is accompanying the performance of Anders Lustgarten’s hard-hitting play Lampedusa, which opens tomorrow.

Starring Pia Zammit and Mikhail Basmadjian and directed by Herman Grech, Lampedusa is performed on different nights in English or Maltese, at the theatre in St James Cavalier.

The Lampedusa Experience is part of an event organised by Unifaun Theatre Foundation and Spazju Kreattiv with the core aim to further increase awareness on immigration.

The exhibition is sponsored by InterVisions Ltd.
