A worldwide flash mob aimed at raising awareness on the need to end violence against women is being celebrated in Malta by Victim Support as part of the One Billion Rising campaign.

The flash mob in Malta is being held at Piazza Tigne' in Sliema on Sunday at 4pm.

The international campaign, stemming from the realisation that one in three women on the planet will be beaten, raped or abused during their lifetime, sees people from all over the world come together on Valentine’s Day to express their outrage, strike, dance, and rise demanding an end to violence against women.

In Malta, about 1,000 cases of domestic violence are reported to the police each year. Many abuses and injustices remain uncovered, Victim Support said.

It said that in the past few years, Malta witnessed a steady rise in the number of domestic violence cases reported.

This result was partly due to a law introduced in 2006, and the victims’ growing confidence in the authorities.

Another issue requiring urgent attention was sexual violence, a crime to which women and girls were particularly vulnerable.
