A Syrian man who last night assaulted a police officer who tried to restrain him during a fight with his brother has been remanded in custody after he denied the charges brought against him.

Ahmad Ilewi, 35, was arraigned by police inspector Robert Vella and pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided by Magistrate Doreen Clarke, heard how the argument was triggered when the accused was ordered by his brother  - with whom he shared an apartment - to pack up his belongings and leave.

Legal aid lawyer Noel Cutajar requested bail but Mr Ilewi was remanded in custody as he did not have a fixed address.

The court also noted that the accused was not trustworthy as he had already breached bail conditions related to other pending cases.
