I cannot fathom George Debono (‘Where biking is as natural as walking’, February 3). He quotes serious accidents but does not advocate strict road control.

Even more, there should be a specialised court to instil responsibility. An irresponsible driver would still be a murderer. A vehicle is as lethal as a gun or knife. As it is, such a driver will only get a minor fine. This is the crux of the problem that Debono should stress.

At the same time I do not follow his logic against proper registration and identification of any type of vehicle. Certain car drivers are pure bullies, but this does not mean that others are not also irresponsible in their attitude on the road.

It is vital that all road users are well aware of the highway code. Even more, there should be an age limit on cyclists. We cannot have children on the overcrowded highways. A bicycle also has the potential to cause injuries.

For the virile, cycling is good, albeit not during storms with the puddles on our roads. But having said this, there are many persons who cannot use a bicycle for their daily use.

To name a few, these include the aged, the mobility impaired, disabled, and those with very small children. I have been assured that a quarter of the population are not suitable to be on two wheels and these must also be catered for.
