Palermo’s coaching merry-go-round continued yesterday after the club announced that Giovanni Bosi, who had been in charge of the club’s youth squad, is to take over as head coach to the senior team with Giovanni Tedesco staying on as his right-hand man.

The decision to promote Bosi to the first-team role came after Guillermo Barros Schelotto was forced to leave his post as he does not hold a valid UEFA licence.

The former Boca Juniors winger, now 42, replaced Davide Ballardini at the Stadio Renzo Barbera last month but his lack of qualifications had prompted president Maurizio Zamparini to rope in Tedesco who led the team from the dug-out in their last three Serie A games.

“After the difficult emergency caused by UEFA’s non-recognition of Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s coaching licence, the technical management of the first team has been entrusted to Primavera coach Giovanni Bosi,” Zamparini said in a statement on the club’s website, yesterday.

“He’ll be assisted by Giovanni Tedesco and Palermo-native Francesco Sicari has also been promoted from the Primavera team to help with athletic preparation.”

European football’s governing body UEFA decided Schelotto does not meet the criteria of having a “minimum of five years experience as head coach of a professional top division club or national ‘A’ team of a FIFA member association”.

Palermo yesterday published UEFA’s verdict on their website alongside a statement confirming the club had taken note of Schelotto’s resignation “with deep regret”.

Bosi is the sixth different tactician to sit on the Rosanero bench this season, with Beppe Iachini having been in charge at the start of the season.

Ballardini replaced him on the bench but was sacked after a spectacular falling-out with the squad.

Fabio Viviani and Bosi took over on an interim basis, before Schelotto arrived, but Tedesco was then named as coach until the Argentine could obtain his licence.

Before joining the team, Palermo-born Tedesco, a former midfielder with the Sicilian club, coached Maltese side Birkirkara FC but was relieved of his duties in December in the wake of a 4-0 defeat to leaders Valletta.

Palermo, 15th in the Serie A table and seven points above the drop zone, host Torino on Sunday.

Under Zamparini, Palermo have had 30 coaches in the last 13 years.
