The government’s debts with one of the developers of the new parliament building in Valletta earned it rebuke on popular Italian TV show Le Iene.

The eight-minute clip pours scorn on the fact that the government still owed Italian contractor CFF Filiberti 3.5 million euros. The company had won a tender in 2011 to provide the cladding for the facade for the Renzo Piano parliament. The contractor says the problems started as soon as the Labour Party came to power and stopped payments because it claimed that a part of the parliament structure was defective.

The journalist is seen chasing after Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to try to understand why the government has only settled 500,000 euros with the contractor.

“You’re misinformed – yes we owe them money because they didn’t do the work properly. I don’t have the full details... But we have a strong economy. We will pay in full,” the Prime Minister assures Le Iene.

At one point, the journalist is seen approaching MPs and pretends to run away with their mobile phones to make up for the debts owed. The feature ends up with the journalist breaking through parliament security before being dragged out by police.

The satirical show on Italia Uno is one of the most popular programmes on Italian TV. Watch the feature above.
