Bridging the skills gap in Malta in Europe was the theme of the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology annual conference held in collaboration with the Education Ministry.

During the event, stakeholders and social partners discussed skills gaps, mismatches or surpluses in European jobs and skills, and local labour demands versus the existing human resource supply, as well as the college’s response to these situations.

The conference, held at Students’ House at Mcast’s main campus, Corradino, was addressed among others by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo, Cedefop director James Calleja and Gerald Schatz, CEO of Linz Center of Mechatronics GmbH.

In the week leading up to the conference Mcast organised various round-table discussions with industry stakeholders and visits by its students to places of work. These discussion forums involved over 600 participants, including students, members of lecturing staff and industrialists. They focused on developing curricula for skills required by the maritime, transport and engineering, hairdressing, applied sciences and agriculture sectors and business administration.

Two other discussion forums for students and lecturers were held at the Armed Forces of Malta and Malta Information Technology Agency.

Over 400 Mcast Foundation College students were also given the opportunity to visit entities related to their studies, including Mita, Aurobindo, Floriana health centre, Andrews Feeds, Tat-Tarġa Kennels, Maltapost, PBS, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Inglott, Automation Techniques and Trelleborg.
