TARXIEN RAINBOWS 4 QORMI 0

As expected, Tarxien Rainbows cruised to a comfortable victory over Qormi to take their season’s tally to a healthy 36 points.

As the scoreline indicates, a gulf exists between the two sides, with the Tarxien goalkeeper Andrea Cassar hardly being tested.

Although Tarxien dominated play for long stretches, the action was mostly limited to the centre of the field with Qormi having no other option but to defend for lengthy spells.

Qormi looked jaded, struggling to get their passing off the ground earlier in the match and the Rainbows profited immediately to take the lead on 18 minutes.

Hevia teased the Qormi rearguard with a meancing cross that the yellow-shirted players failed to deal with and Pedro took his chance excellently with a low shot that gave the Qormi goalkeeper Andreas Vella no chance.

The goal failed to lift the tempo though and as the clock weighed down it seemed that Tarxien were happy to go into the break 1-0 in front.

However, in the first 10 minutes of the second half, they created two scoring chances, the last of which yielded a second goal.

The second half was less than five minutes old when Pedro produced an inswinger from corner that cannoned off the crossbar.

Four minutes later, Hevia passed to the advancing Ayrton Azzopardi who showed excellent poise to dribble his marker before unleashing a stunning shot that evaded Cassar’s clutches.

Tarxien were in total control and unlikely to let their two-goal advantage slip. In fact, after 64 minutes, Luke Montebello fed the ball towards the penalty area, where Hevia stormed into the box before ruthlessly buried the ball into the net to add to his opponents’ anguish.

Scerri’s lads added further gloss to their victory, when 12 minutes from time Kurt Magro handled Sergio Prendes’s cross inside the box. Montebello made no mistake from the spot-kick.
