The government has welcomed EU figures showing that unemployment in Malta in December, at 5.1%, was the third lowest in the bloc.

This was the lowest rate since Eurostat starting compiling data about Malta.

Malta currently has an unemployment rate that is less than half that of the eurozone," the government commented.

It said that under the former government, the average rate of unemployment was 6.5% and in February 2010 it reached 7.2%.

Since the time of the last budget presented by the PN government, unemployment had dropped by some 2,000 persons with notable improvement in youth employment which had dropped from  14.4% in 2012 to 12.6%, thanks mostly to the Youth Guarantee Scheme which, the government said, the PN had opposed.

The government promised more measures to further reduce unemployment and improve the skills of the Maltese workforce.
