Malta has been asked by the European Commission to provide information about the 7,000 Schengen visas reportedly issued to Algerians over an 18-month period, the  European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos has said.

“On the basis of this information, the Commission will assess whether those practices are in line with the relevant Union law,” he was quoted as saying by the New Europe website.

Avramopoulos’ was replying to a European Parliament question asked by French MEP Elisabeth Morin-Chartier.
