In his book Lord of the Rings, renowned English author J. R. R. Tolkien puts on Gandalf’s lips the words “You shall not pass” as the wise wizard confronts the mighty Balrog.

I am almost definitely sure that these words could not by any chance be repeated to Maria Antonio Galea as her soul came face to face with the pearly gates.

Maria Antonio Galea, known dearly among the people of Victoria as Nona ta’ Rizzu, was a woman of ladylike characteristics.

Besides being a woman of unshakeable faith, Nona was endowed with the rare gifts of gentleness and simplicity which radiated from her.

I had the privilege of visiting her a few times and although she carried her fair share of suffering, she always had a smile that reflected the profound sense of peace and serenity that made her such a rare person. Nona knew the meaning of the word ‘tribulation’ and as she learnt to bear her cross, she grew in her humility.

Through her meekness she attracted all those who hadthe privilege of coming to know her. May the Lord grant her eternal peace.
