Qormi FC have brought in Italian Marco Banchini to work with head coach Johann Scicluna as the relegation-troubled club look to revive their hopes of avoiding the drop at the end of the season.

Banchini’s arrival comes at a perfect time for the Premier League strugglers who are passing through a difficult spell as back-to-back 5-0 defeats to Balzan and Naxxar Lions has seen the team drop to second from bottom in the standings.

Club president Jesmond Aquilina told reporters yesterday that Banchini’s arrival was part of a sponsorship agreement that Qormi FC had just struck with new Italian investors.

Aquilina said Banchini’s arrival will not threaten the position of Scicluna at the helm of the first team.

“I want to make it clear that Johann Scicluna will remain our head coach,” Aquilina said.

“The committee has full faith in his qualities and we believe he can take our club forward. Marco Banchini will surely be a good working partner for our coach as they look to combine their skills and help the club move higher in the standings.”

Banchini is looking forward to his new challenge in Maltese football.

“I want to thank Qormi FC for giving me the opportunity to work at this club,” Banchini said.
