Driving an icon is not an everyday occurrence. The Fiat 500 is one such icon. Originally launched in 1949, the front engine 500 was aimed at meeting the demands of the post-war market which called for economy cars. Back then, it had a two-door coupe body with sun-roof, which was later complemented by an estate version.

Both models continued until 1954 when they were replaced by an all new, lighter car. Like its bigger brother, the 1955 Fiat 600, this new model had a rear-mounted engine, on the pattern of the Volkswagen Beetle. Several car makers followed the now uncommon rear engine configuration at the time and were quite successful.

Despite its diminutive size, the 500 proved to be an enormously practical and popular vehicle throughout Europe.

Besides the two-door coupe, it was also available as the Giardiniera estate. This variant featured the standard engine laid on its side, the wheelbase lengthened by 10cm to provide a more convenient rear seat, a full-length sunroof, and larger brakes from the Fiat 600. Sports models were famously produced by Abarth and Giannini.

Fast-forward to today and the new 500 has come a long way. In fact, it’s no longer considered a low budget car – rather, it has evolved into a fashion icon.

The latest generation has maintained its market status. In terms of design, it hasn’t changed much. It is, admittedly, bigger and more spacious but the look is still simple and straightforward. However, the designers have managed to create that something special, making the 500 a much requested vehicle. The 500 is a beautiful machine that turns heads. People enjoy being seen in a 500 because it combines Italian style and flair.

The 500 is a joy in traffic and parking is so easy

On the inside, the 500’s finish is very detailed and the layout is stylish. Leg and headroom are ample for the front passengers, a little less for the back passengers, especially if the front people are tall. The driver has a commanding position and has very good visibility all round. Moreover, the gearbox is within easy reach, so you can quickly take your hand off the steering wheel, change gear and have it back on the wheel in no time.

The pedals are soft and easy to use and the clutch is silky smooth, which allows for effortless gear change. Brakes are responsive and effective and the gas pedal is very reactive.

The drive is extremely fun – the 500 is a joy in traffic and parking is so easy. Given its size and weight, the 500 is nippy – step on the pedal and the Italian icon is off in a buzzy hurry. The go-cart feel of the drive is all there and you can really enjoy a drive along an open road. Of course, the 500 is no sports car so don’t expect it to behave as one – however, it can definitely give you plenty of pleasure when pushed.

The 500 comes into its own on the busy Maltese roads. Not only is it fun to drive but it also attracts plenty of admiring looks thanks to its elegant curves. However, the 500 is not only about elegance – it also packs the latest technology, including factory-installed radio and touch-screen, as well as safety features, including electronic stability control, tyre monitoring system and airbags all round.

Almost seven decades after it was first launched, the 500 has changed a lot – and yet, it still presents the same successful formula that combines style and substance.
