The new penalties announced recently by the government for using a mobile phone while driving are an absolute farce. Last weekend, while travelling round the now famous Kappara roundabout, I saw no fewer than four motorists using their phones. Isn’t it amazing?
This habit is now endemic, just like the total disregard for speed limits, driving on the wrong side of the road, double parking, non-existent traffic wardens and traffic policemen and traffic chaos every minute of the day.
How about treating this problem with a €1,000 fine and a 12-month ban on driving?
But for this measure to be implemented wisely the government has to find a way to place more law enforcement officers on our roads.
