Since I do not happen to be one of those who complain about something only between the four walls of my home, as a result of which nothing will change, I tend to voice my thoughts in the papers.

Sadly, I was described by someone at Malta Public Transport, during an interview with a relative of mine, as not liking them. This is far from the truth. I don’t recall anyone from MPT ever denying the contents of my letters.

I refer to another letter, that by Joe Genovese, ‘Near tragedy on a bus stop’ (January 23) in which he describes how a bus door swung shut catching the foot of someone attempting to board.

For the safety of passengers, drivers should be more careful. They are supposed to have mirrors showing what is happening in and around the bus. But unfortunately, what Genovese related is not an isolated case.

A friend told me that while boarding a bus at Msida, amid chaos, her daughter’s arm was caught in the bus door. Someone must he held accountable for these incidents.

Commuters should at least be made to realise that they could easily get hurt by bus doors swinging shut. We have been told that drivers, before being accepted for the job, receive adequate training and information. This is as it should be, especially with foreign employees who are not familiar with our roads and language.

However, an elderly lady was telling me that prior to boarding a bus, she asked the driver whether it was for San Vinċenz.

The driver replied: “What? Not understand!” Someone came to the rescue and asked the same question to the driver in English. The driver’s flat reply was “Not know”.

I leave it readers to come to their own conclusions. These incidents are being made public for the sake of safety.
