The government and the university this afternoon signed an agreement guaranteeing 200 university placements for medical students each clinical year once Barts opened its medical campus and St Luke’s hospital started being run by the private sector.

The number of medical students applying for university courses in recent years was up to 190. If more than 200 students applied, Health Minister Konrad Mizzi said, discussions would be held to see what could be done.

The minister also said that other agreements were expected to be reached with the Medical Association of Malta, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses, the General Workers’ Union and the Union Haddiema Maghqudin.

The agreement was signed by Dr Mizzi and University rector Juanito Camilleri.
