Star Trek actor Chris Pine has admitted he will be avoiding cold water for the foreseeable future as his new maritime movie premiered in Hollywood.

The actor plays coastguard Bernie Webber in The Finest Hours, a film based on the true story of a rescue attempt during a blizzard in 1952.

The role involved spending months in a huge tank of cold water - and Pine, 35, says he now has no desire to return to it.

Speaking on the red carpet at the world premiere, he said: "Days blurred into the next, it was just very cold and very wet for a long time and you just kind of got through it.

"I will be staying out of water now unless it's warm."

He added: "It was 70ft waves and no visibility and it was snowing and sleeting and raining and they had a wooden boat so just the decision to go was the most surprising thing, they couldn't see anything and they had no compass. Would you do it? I don't know if I would."

British actress Holliday Grainger, best known for her roles in Cinderella and Jane Eyre, takes on the role of Webber's wife Miriam.

She said: I so love Chris's portrayal of Bernie, the old school values of honesty and integrity being more important than any kind of masculine pride, and I think he plays it beautifully. The two of us fell in love with Bernie and Miriam's relationship, the fact that they met over the phone for four months and were so instinctive."

The Finest Hours will be released in the UK on February 19.
