The last of the iconic Land Rover Defender ofroad vehicles will roll off the production line this week, ending 68 years of production.
The Defender has changed over the decades, but it remains as instantly recognizable as it was at its launch soon after the second world war. Inspired by the American Jeeps that had flooded Europe during the war, it was made from aluminium. Since then it became synonymous with the military, farming, adventure, life-guarding, life-saving, rescuing, exploring and endeavour.
Defenders have been produced in Solihull in the UK since 1948, making this the longest continuous production of a vehicle in the world. Some 70% of the two million built are believed to still exist.
