Wilfrid Asciak, former managing director of Progress Press and director of Allied newspapers, has passed away after a short illness. He was 85.

Mr Asciak retired in 2003 after a career spanning over 54 years that included stints in the editorial, sports and advertising departments.

He was also the national billiards champion for 16 years, 11 of which were consecutive. In 1958, he was runner-up in the World Amateur Billiard Championship.

Allied Group’s managing director Adrian Hillman said that Mr Asciak was one of the longest-serving employees of the company and a true gentleman. He was a very much loved individual who would be sorely missed.

Mr Asciak leaves to mourn his loss his wife Marion, his sons Ralph and his wife Vanessa, Gordon and his wife Helen, Mark and his wife Helene, his daughter Rosanne and her husband Darryl, and his grandchildren Gordon Jr., Matthew, Andrew, Marty and Michael.
