5. Find the Glitch

Shrouded in mystery and touted as a one-of-a-kind musical experience, the enigmatic two-day Glitch Festival, taking place in Malta for the first time later this year, is drawing interest from house and techno enthusiasts around Europe.

The festival has already generated a great deal of hype and excitement following its announcement a few weeks ago. For the first edition, the festival organisers promise a huge line-up of the finest international acts who will keep the festival going day and night, in an as yet unannounced venue hidden in the woods.

The ‘house and techno fortress’ where the festival is set to take place is set to feature mythical décor and will host a mixture of house and disco acts in the sunshine followed by darker, disjointed techno, acid and electro at night.

With expectations running high, the line-up is expected to be announced soon.

Glitch Festival takes place on September 7 and 8. Pre-sale tickets are available online.

4. Rock on a Friday night

The team behind the Hard Rock Afterdark series during 2015 returns with a rocking event. Patrick Camilleri (The Creepers) and Daryl Ebejer (12th Ode) have assembled a group of musicians from various bands to deliver a night of rock classics.

Recently baptised as Rock Troupers, the duo plans to continue using the formula that brought together a diversity of music talents on one stage for productions like Freddie for a Day. Held locally in September of 2014 it has blossomed into a constant gathering of local aetists. During this event, metal, blues, rock, pop and funk artists get together to deliver a night of classic hits from members of 12th Ode, Elder Water, Fire, Purple Haze, Relikc, Scar and The Creepers. The event also features singers Tiziana Calleja, Janice Debattista and Chris Grech.

Expect music from Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Led Zeppelin from the 1970s; Iron Maiden, Whitesnake and Motorhead from the 1980s; Metallica, Roxette and Four non Blondes from the 1990s, Paramore from the 2000s and more. DJ Clint Spiteri will play a warm-up set and a post-gig set.

Razzett Rocks takes place on Friday at Razzett l-Aħmar, Mosta. Doors open at 9pm.

3. Experience Brikkuni at the cinema

After a successful performance at the Manoel Theatre and a Boxing Day party at the Orpheum, Maltese band Brikkuni takes to the stage in an unexpected location – Cinema 11 at the Eden Cinemas, St Julian’s. The setlist is expected to include both the newer, recently debutted material as well as the old favourites from the first and second albums of the band.

The concert takes place on February 17 at 9.15pm at the Eden Cinemas, St Julian’s.

2. Learn about the history of medicine

Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) launches its calendar of events with the first talk of the year delivered by Carmel Lino Cutajar at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. Cutajar will trace the evolution of medicine throughout the whole period of human activity on the islands. Nebulous evidence of ancient times builds up to the grandeur of medical developments with the advent of the Hospitaller Order of St John whose hospital, the Sacra Infermeria, built in 1574, was among the most advanced in Europe.

Cutajar will relate the outstanding progress in contemporary medicine in Malta to medical advances on the European mainland. Important local medical developments, events and personages will receive special mention. Members of FAA will also be able to obtain a signed copy of Cutajar’s autobiography In at the Deep End: Reminiscences of a Maltese Surgeon at a discounted price.

The talk takes place on Wednesday at 6.30pm at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. Tickets are available online.
