Losco's superb song Chameleon (Invincible), as well as her evident confidence on stage earned her the passport to represent Malta in Sweden.

Her orchestral pop song earned 68 points beating Brooke's Golden into second place with 58 points and Franklin's Little Love in third place. The 34-year-old singer also won 40 per cent of the popular vote.

Expectations were high for Losco, as evidenced by the massive support inside the Mediterranean Conference Centre where the festival was held.

Wearing a white hood over a white top and jeans, Losco performed alone on stage her orchestral pop song, which many believe has the right ingredients for a Eurovision festival.

She earned the maximum 12 points from four of the six judges while Brooke earned maximum points from two of the judges.

The Eurovision has become more special and exciting, so why not take part again

Speaking after her triumph, Losco said she believed she had nailed her performance and would have been happy whatever the outcome.

"It feels great and surreal. I'm happy to have been part of this contest. The Eurovision has become more special and exciting, so why not take part again," she said.

It will be Losco's second appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest after she became Malta's darling in 2002 when her song Seventh Wonder placed second at the festival.

The show also featured performances from last year's winner Amber and this year's Junior Eurovision winner Destiny.

The Eurovision festival will be held in Stockholm in May.

Losco is due to release her 10th album shortly.
