The European Parliament in Strasbourg approved amendments relevant to Malta in the annual report on EU Competition Policy, put forward by MEP Alfred Sant.

Dr Sant (PL) was serving as shadow rapporteur on behalf of the Socialists and Democrats group.

Dr Sant’s proposals emphasised that state intervention was often the most effective policy tool to guarantee vital services to safeguard economic and social conditions in isolated regions.

With regard to fiscal policy, he put forward the proposal that member states respond to different policy imperatives according to their particular circumstances, including geographical location, size, and the state of their economic and social development.

Greater leeway in state aid rules application was also indicated.

The annual report presented by rapporteur German MEP Werner Langen (EPP) was passed with 500 votes in favour, 137 against and 73 abstentions.
