Thanks to their victory over Gżira Athleta, Caffe Moak Luxol finished the women’s basketball league first round with a perfect record and top of the table as second-placed Electrofix Hibernians potted 100 points past lowly Starlites Sports Experience to maintain their challenge.

Luxol showed they’re the team to beat after staving aside Athleta’s challenge 67-50.

The champions were always in the lead as five consecutive points at the end of the first quarter put them 21-13 in front and on their way to victory.

Athleta tried to limit the damage and at half-time they trailed 23-40. They continued to show the better qualities on the restart to reduce the gap to ten points for the last quarter, 50-40.

But at this juncture, Luxol clicked back into gear to dash their opponents’ hopes of an upset and maintain their unbeaten run in the national championship.

Hibs finished their first round commitments on a high, beating Starlites 100-33.

By the end of the first quarter, Hibs had already built a handsome 33-6 lead and changed ends 44-18 in front after a more balanced second quarter.

Hibs imposed their superiority over Starlites in the third quarter and continued to score points at regular intervals with a Nicole Vella three-pointer rounding the score to an impressive 100.

Meanwhile, Depiro were back on track after a 46-31 win over bottom-placed Floriana.

Though playing without Sam Brincat and Maria Bonett, Depiro were still the better side and led 27-14 at half-time.

Standings: Luxol 10 (5-0), Hibernians 9 (4-1), Athleta 8 (3-2), Depiro 7 (2-3), Starlites 6 (1-4), Floriana 5 (0-5).
