The poster promoting this year’s Gozo Carnival 2016 was commissioned to Gozitan artist Paul Falzon from Xewkija.

The poster’s main character, dressed partly in poor clothes and partly in rich clothing, is inspired by the late Gozitan folk singer Fredu Spiteri il-Leverist (1930-1965), to mark the 50th anniversary of his tragic death.

During carnival, folk singers and musicians traditionally join forces to entertain and amuse crowds in the street and in wine bars.

The folk singer in the poster is accompanied by a young artist representing dancers who animate carnival in village squares.

In the background, two characters, one with a mask and another with a painted face, are lost in a world of fantasy, free from worry.

The composition is encircled by a rainbow of colours focusing on the Banca Giuratale, Victoria, a symbol of Gozitan identity.
