The University and Public Broadcasting Services have agreed to collaborate to promote awareness of scientific research projects conducted at University through the production and transmission of documentaries on PBS channels. The aim is to help raise awareness about the University’s scientific research and how this is contributing to make life better for society and find solutions to various problems.

A pilot documentary, the first in a series of 12, will be funded by PBS. The University and PBS are seeking sponsors for the rest of the series among people, organisations and companies interested in supporting innovative projects that promote science literacy. Topics to be tackled in the series include research on the genetics of blood disorders, ICT, marine archaeology and brain-computer interface.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said investment in research is slowly increasing and will need to gain momentum to reach the Europe 2020 targets. More exposure to the research conducted will help drive this momentum and the country to reach this goal.

The one-year collaboration agreement was signed by University rector Juanito Camilleri and PBS chairman Tonio Portughese in the presence of Mr Bartolo and Culture Minister Owen Bonnici.
