On December 22, an earthquake was felt by people in the eastern and central parts of Malta. The magnitude 3.4 tremor, which was recorded by seismographs operated by the University’s Seismic Monitoring and Research Group, occurred around 40 kilometres north of Malta and lasted for about a minute. Internationally, the strongest earthquake occurring last month was a magnitude 7.2 one that struck Tajikistan, killing two people and destroying a number of homes. The quake also shook buildings as far as Pakistan and India. Tajikistan is located in central Asia, an area known to have a high seismic risk.
