Balzan put their championship challenge back on track when they scored two goals in each half to overcome Mosta 4-1 at the Tedesco Stadium yesterday.

Balzan took the lead on 10 minutes when Dylan Grima stormed into the area and his drive was pushed away by Borg into the path of Micallef who blasted the ball into the net.

Mosta tried to recover from that early setback and gradually they started to get more into the picture and on 26 minutes James Brincat sprinted clear on the left before sending a teasing cross into the path of Fidelis who failed to connect in front of a gaping net.

Balzan doubled their lead eight minutes later when Fenech powered his way into the area before sending a low cross towards Effiong who fired the ball into the roof of the net.

Mosta looked a rejuvenated side on the restart and on 52 minutes they pulled a goal back.

Adrian Borg’s teasing cross was met by Tyrone Farrugia who nodded the ball into the path of Brincat who beat Cassar with a fine volley.

On the hour, Fenech marred his debut when he picked up his second yellow card for a rush challenge on Kyle Frendo and was dismissed.

With a man more on the pitch Mosta stepped up the pressure and two minutes later Fidelis beat the Balzan offside track but was denied by the onrushing Cassar.
But Balzan ended their opponents’ hopes of a recovery when on 76 minutes Ryan Fenech hit a powerful low drive that gave no chance to Omar Borg.

Mosta looked stunned and Balzan went on to add a fourth goal a minute from time when in a swift break Da Silva Souza turned past two defenders before hitting a low shot that gave no chance to Borg.

Balzan midfielder Ryan Fenech was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
