A 1969 Custom Gibson Ebony Dove guitar played by Elvis Presley in the early 1970s has been sold at an auction for $270,000.

The auction was held at the late singer's home in Graceland, Memphis.

He played the guitar at dozens of concerts from 1971 to 1975, and in the documentary "Elvis on Tour".

The guitar had been expected to fetch more than $300,000.

The auction included an original tape recording of Elvis performing, and other jewellery.
