Zach Muscat is set to continue the current season in the Italian league as yesterday Birkirkara and SS Akragas reached an agreement that would see the Malta right-back spending the next six months with the Lega Pro outfit.

Sicily-based Akragas initially showed their interest in Muscat two months ago and they tabled a bid for the 22-year-old late last month.

Negotiations between the two parties were ongoing in the past few weeks and a deal was finally struck last night.

For Muscat, who had attracted interest from Pisa at the start of the season, this will be his first experience away from our shores.

Elsewhere, Ryan Grech will have his contract at Mosta FC rescinded following mutual agreement with the Premier League club.

Grech, a midfielder, found his first-team opportunities limited this season and asked the club committee to release him with sources saying the 30-year-old now intends to continue the 2015-16 campaign with Premier League newcomers Pembroke Athleta.

Talks are still ongoing and if a deal is struck Grech will become the second former Mosta player to join Pembroke this month.

Last week, Pembroke signed wingback Manolito Micallef on a three-year contract.

Pembroke, meanwhile, are resigned to losing the services of Austin Martz who is not expected to return from his holidays in the US.

The American forward played a key role in Pembroke’s solid start to the championship, netting five goals in 16 league appearances.

Coach Winston Muscat will have to look for alternatives and he is currently monitoring three other American players on trial.
