An Albanian was this afternoon given a two-year jail term suspended for four years after he pleaded guilty to travelling with a false document.

Denis Haska, 24, who arrived in Malta with his own passport on New Year's Day, attempted to travel on to the UK with a tampered Greek document on January 2.

He will be leaving for Albania tomorrow and banned from travelling to Europe for the next three to five years.

Magistrate Anthony Micallef Trigona warned Mr Haska that travelling with false documents was subject to an effective prison sentence.

"You cannot stay wasting people's time... Technically I can put you in prison for three years," the magistrate said.

Inspector Frankie Sammut prosecuted. Lawyer Noel Bianco was defence counsel.
