World number four Stan Wawrinka will be aiming to make it a hat-trick of titles at the Chennai Open in India after confirming his participation for the 2016 edition to be held in January.

Switzerland’s Wawrinka, 30, has won the last two editions of the tournament – to add to his victory from 2011 – and last year beat Britain’s Aljaz Bedene in the final.

The Chennai Open will kick off the ATP’s 2016 calendar next Monday, as the focus slowly moves towards the year’s opening Grand Slam in Australia.

Wawrinka, who won the French Open in 2015, will once again join Bedene at the Chennai Open, with South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, France’s Benoit Paire, and Spain’s Roberto Bautista-Agut among the names making the line-up.

“I’ve always enjoyed coming to Chennai,” Wawrinka said.

“The tournament is a nice way to start the season, the fans are great and I like the atmosphere in the stadium.

“Of course, I would love to defend my title, but I will have to go match by match.”

Wawrinka’s 2015 season had been a relatively productive one given his victory at Roland Garros, which followed a semi-final finish in Melbourne, before he made the last eight at Wimbledon and the last four at the US Open.
