Poor families will receive a 15kg package of 13 products every quarter from January as part of the EU food-aid programme.

The more vulnerable families will be receiving a supplementary package with an additional 10kg of the same products.

Social Solidarity Minister Michael Farrugia said yesterday the package would include cereals, milk, pasta, vegetables and canned goods. The programme will target families on social assistance with two children or more, and others that earn less than the minimum wage. It also targets families who survive on the minimum pension.

Food will be distributed every quarter. The first delivery will be between January 18 and 22. Almost 4,000 people are expected to benefit and will be informed through the post.

Food will be distributed from LEAP centres in Xewkija, Qawra, Vittoriosa, Msida, Valletta, Sta Luċija, Marsascala, Żurrieq, Kirkop and Qormi; the social security offices in Mosta, Żejtun, San Ġwann, Rabat, Marsa and Żebbuġ; and the Social Welfare Foundation office in Sta Venera.
