The Technical Regulations Division within the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority has encountered a number of hoverboards, also known as drifting scooters and balance wheels, which are being placed on the market for consumers. Four samples of such products are pictured. Other similar products, even under different names, may also be on the market.

The TRD advises consumers that these products may pose a risk of injury or death due to the possibility of falling off a moving platform and hence urges those who ride them to always wear adequate and approved protective equipment and carefully read and abide by the instruction manual.

The authority also advises economic operators to ensure that the relevant declarations of conformity are available when the Market Surveillance Directorate requests such documents. Placing non-compliant products on the market constitutes an act against the Product Safety Act and legal action will be taken against those operators who place such non-compliant products on the market.
