An animal awareness week was held at San Ġorġ Preca College’s Boys’ Secondary School, Ħamrun.

The programme kicked off with a talk by Natalino Cristiano from the Malta Guide Dogs Foundation, who showed students how blind people are assisted by trained guide dogs.

Lawrence Formosa from Federicus Rex Malta Falconers gave a falconry display that captured students’ attention.

A representative of Island Sanctuary gave the students an overview of how the organisation for abandoned dogs carries out its work.Students and teachers later visited the Malta Falconry Centre and the Island Sanctuary and donated food and money to the sanctuary.

Teachers of English also held story-telling sessions and book reviews in the school library.

The programme ended with the blessing of pets by Fr Alex Cauchi. This activity was attended by Animal Welfare Commissioner Emanuel Buhagiar, and Animal Welfare Inspector Ian Vella, Ħamrun mayor Christian Sammut and school principal James Camilleri.
