Do events like the KSU Arts Festival help improve art appreciation on campus?

While it’s good to see importance being given to the Arts, I feel like people still think of ‘art’ as strictly painting, and not a lot of people realise that literature, theatre, dance, and music are also an art. Even though the Faculty of Arts is huge and has thousands of students every year, we’re still the butt of everyone’s jokes. It’s going to take more than just a few events from KSU to create a better attitude towards it. Victoria Melita Zammit, 3rd year BA (Hons) English.

I think that activities and events like the KSU Arts Festival will help art appreciation as most people do not acknowledge art students and their work. Mike Borg, 1st year B. Commerce.

No. The Festival was held on the outskirts of the university, which doesn't encourage students to go. Clyde Preston Sammut, 1st year B. Psychology.

Is it more difficult for arts students to find a job?

There is some difficulty. Jobs typically applied for by Arts students aren’t so in demand. However, having a degree in the Arts also opens the door to a lot of great opportunities – you could graduate in English but end up working in Marketing, Human Resources or Research, for example. Not all roads lead to teaching. Victoria Melita Zammit

It might be more difficult for an arts student to find work than a student with another degree. However, one must take into consideration that with the large number of students reading for courses like law or commerce, not all students will be successful in finding the job they want. Arts students, just like law, commerce or medicine students, choose their degree because they are passionate about their subject. Mike Borg

Very difficult. I don’t think there are enough opportunities or career options for them locally. Clyde Preston Sammut

What can give further exposure to the arts at University and beyond?

On campus, more events throughout the year, as well as more information sessions. People think that a degree in English is just about reading novels, but it’s more than that. People need to be better informed about us. Victoria Melita Zammit

More campaigns with events similar to the arts festival, showcasing and displaying the performance arts.

Talks about international cultures, history and archeological displays and language performances. Mike Borg

More outlets and venues need to be provided for all types of arts – allowing artists to vandalise white walls would help. Clyde Preston Sammut
