The founder of outdoor clothing and equipment company The North Face, Douglas Tompkins, has died during a kayaking trip in Chile.

Tompkins was on General Carrera Lake in Patagonia in southern Chile with a group of five others when his kayak flipped and he fell into the icy waters.

Authorities say investigations continue to determine just what exactly happened.

The kayakers were rescued by the Chilean Navy. Tompkins´s five companions were unharmed.

Doctors did what they could to save Tompkins' life.

A family spokesman said "We are all shocked, though in some way he was doing what he loved, enjoying nature."
